I also got this error. There is probably a deeper reason why, but I found that downgrading expo-cli@2.2.0 back to @2.1.3 fixed the issue immediately.
I tested @2.2.0 with an expo init junk-project-name and it worked fine. Definitely something wrong with my setup or one of my imports somewhere, but I couldn’t find it in half a day of searching.
